Id heard the word trolls before but never really known what it means in relation to the internt.
So I looked up my trusted reference for such things which is Wikipedia, and found this definition:
From here
“In Internet slang, a troll is a person who posts inflammatory, insincere, digressive,[1] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.), a newsgroup, forum, chat room, online video game, or blog), with the intent of provoking readers into displaying emotional responses,[2] or manipulating others' perception. This is typically for the troll's amusement, …”
Recently on the Forestdale Facebook page, I have noticed this type of trolling activity.
Because I don't often look at Facebook, I have been missing what many people most likely already new. Thats some people post, to get a reaction of from other people.
According to Wikipedia the best advise in dealing with trolls is just ignore them. That is ok if you no who the Trolls are. But the only way to find out is to watch other people's responses to them or respond to them yourself. But that is difficult for someone that's new to a group or has not been watching the activity of a group. Like me. So I don't feel ignoring them is going to remove the problem.
The problem being that they get satisfaction out of seeing others suffer. The Psychological aspect of trolling is described in wikipedia as:
“Trolling correlates positively with sadism,[17][18][19][20] trait psychopathy,[17][18][19][20] and Machiavellianism[64] (see Dark triad). Trolls take pleasure from causing pain and emotional suffering.[17][19][20] Their ability to upset or harm gives them a feeling of power.[64][65] Psychological researches conducted in the fields of personality psychology and cyberpsychology report that trolling behaviour qualifies as an anti-social behaviour and is strongly correlated to sadistic personality disorder (SPD).[17][19][20]”
Unfortunately the Wikipedia article on Sadistic Personally Disorders, (SPD) does not give any advice. It points out that SPD was in the appendix of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III-R). But is not in the latest one.
Although it says it's cause is unclear it does mention that child abuse could be a risk factor.
Perhaps this information itself may be enough to deal with Trolling behaviour.
