Historical aerial imagery

Queensland historical images

Want to know what your place used to look like 90 odd years ago.

The Queensland government has got aerial imaging going back to about the 1930s.

You can access it from here:

https://qimagery.information.qld.gov.au/

The navigation of the site is not particularly intuitive. I initially had trouble getting up the images.

You can zoom in on the shown Map to select the area you're interested in or use some of the other settings such as an address or drawing a box over the map.

To do some of that you have to use the search icon and select one of its options and then click search.

It then gives a list on the left-hand side of the items that match the search. Current image descriptions are at the top and older ones at the bottom. Often there are multiple aerial images of an area and clicking on a collection will expand it to the individual images. Then clicking on view will show it on the map.

Or you can also download the image.

Here is one of Logan Central in 1946:

And a screen dump of that same image overlayed on a current map:

Then is was just a rural area.

You can select multiple images at different time periods.

But better again for the whole to the world you can use Google Earth and show a time lapse of how things are changed

Time lapse images on Google Earth

Buy the Google Earth engine in Google maps, it's possible to watch a time lapse animation in most places of the world.

From here:

Unfortunately for around Brisbane area at only goes back to about 1984. But in some parts of the world goes back to 1970.

Its astonishing and worrying to watch the green areas turn to yellow.
