As the old saying goes thers no such thing as a free lunch.

Even though you don't pay any money for these Microsoft products you are paying in some way, otherwise Microsoft would eventually go out of business.

As in the situation with Facebook and Google what you're actually paying with is yourself. You become the product that gets sold on to others.

However with Microsoft it's a bit different to Google and Facebook, in that Microsoft in their software licence agreement say that you have to take their updates. That effectively means they are in control of the hardware devices that you own. That is of great value to them and of potentially even great value in the future. With Google and Facebook you can decide to use other services. With Microsoft because they control your hardware, they can control the services that you use. A subtle but very important difference.
