RE: Ongoing Unresolved Powertrain Faults and Service-Induced Electrical Failures

I am writing to formally address the ongoing, unresolved mechanical and electrical faults concerning my 2022 MG HS PHEV, purchased from your dealership.

As you are aware, my rights and responsibilities are governed strictly under the Australian Consumer Law (ACL). Consumer guarantees dictate that goods must be of acceptable quality, free from defects, and fit for purpose. When a minor failure is not resolved within a reasonable time, it escalates to a major failure under the ACL, entitling the consumer to statutory remedies, including rejection of the vehicle, replacement, or a full refund.

Summary of Incident History and Recent Workshop Malpractice

  • Initial Fault: On 11 April 2026, an engine fault icon appeared, accompanied by an O2 sensor code (P2271). Subsequent visits and delays resulted in your facility holding the car, citing lengthy manufacturer pre-approval processes that fall outside my legal contract with your dealership.
  • Ignition Coil Intervention: On 12 June 2026, your service department diagnosed a misfire and stated a replacement ignition coil was required.
  • Current Service-Induced Failure (23 July 2026): On 23 July 2026, I dropped the vehicle off for the scheduled component fitting. Upon collection later that afternoon, I was informed that oil was found in a cylinder and that you required the vehicle for a further week to liaise with MG.
  • Immediate Post-Service Diagnostic Codes: Upon driving the vehicle away from your premises on 23 July 2026, the engine fault icon was immediately illuminated. Scanning the vehicle via my OBD reader revealed four simultaneous current powertrain faults: P0201, P0202, P0203, and P0204 (Injector Circuit faults across all four cylinders) alongside a pending P0303 (Cylinder 3 Misfire).

It is statistically and mechanically impossible for all four fuel injectors to experience independent electrical or mechanical failure simultaneously. Furthermore, because the vehicle operated without these four circuit codes prior to entering your workshop, this cluster of faults is a direct result of incomplete reassembly, an unseated multi-pin harness connector, or an unbolted engine ground left loose by your technicians during work around the valve cover and ignition coil area.

Demands and Required Resolution

Your recent request to retain my vehicle for an open-ended period of one week to coordinate with the manufacturer is unacceptable. The repeated failures, lengthy administrative delays, and service-induced faults now represent a systemic breach of consumer guarantees under the ACL.

To avoid immediate escalation to the Office of Fair Trading Queensland and formal action through the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT) for a major failure remedy, you must comply with the following conditions:

  • Fully Equivalent Replacement Transport: If the vehicle must remain in your workshop for diagnostic verification and rectification, you must provide a loan vehicle that matches the functional capabilities of my own—specifically a Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) equipped with a functional towbar and matching comprehensive insurance coverage. Standard small petrol hatchbacks or non-towing courtesy vehicles are inadequate and fail to provide functional equivalence.
  • Expedited, Corrective Rectification: Given that the multi-circuit injector faults were induced during your last handling of the vehicle, your team must immediately inspect and correct the wiring harness, connectors, and grounds associated with the recent coil/valve cover work without delay.
  • Formal Written Confirmation: Provide a written undertaking detailing the exact corrective steps taken to resolve both the original misfire/oil issue and the newly introduced four-cylinder injector circuit faults.

Please confirm your agreement to these terms by close of business on Monday, 27 July 2026.

Thanks Geoffrey Greig
