Government Secrecy

If you were an employer and you employed somebody to be a security person for you and you're asked them to do a report on your current security status, but they would not give you the report because they say that, that will be a security risk, you would most likely sack them

But other than the sacking that's exactly what often happens with governments.

In democracies politicians get voted in and a paid for by voters, to do certain things. Then sometimes, for a multiple reasons, these politicians say they cannot give information to the populace. Because it is a secret, that they say, it is best, that only they see, and they know about.

The reasons given for the secretary can be, security, privacy, confidentionaly commercial in confidence or it is required by law. But these politicians are the ones that make the law.

Recient Example

In relation to the closing of the Eagleby aquatic centre, according to the My City Logan newspaper of 2nd to the 8th of August 2022 on page 5 when asked if a feasibility study had been done to keep the pool open, the councils spin Doctors refused to answer

“This matter was a confidential item in yesterday's council meeting. A media release was issued yesterday” they responded

Open Government

Many people talk about the concept of open government. What does exactly open government mean? That the doors to the government offices are open?

According to this Wikipedia page “Open government is the governing doctrine which sustain that citizens have the right to access the documents and proceedings of the government to allow for effective public oversight”

But that does not seem to exist

Why does such Secrecy exist

Because of previous made laws and codes

Like, Code of conduct “Local government principles”, the first of which is “transparent and effective processes, and decision-making in the public interest”.

But the document “Code of Conduct for Councillors in Queensland” that describes “Consequences of failing to comply with the Code of Conduct” ,States that “The conduct of a Councillor…. is misconduct if… the conduct is, or involves….a release of confidential information outside of the Council”

It would appear to me that it is not possible to be transparent when information is made confidential.

Also like the Logan council “Local Government and Committee Meeting Code”, section about Circumstances for Closed Meeting.

Such closed meeting are not open and transparent government.

Just because these codes and laws exist, does not mean they cannot be changed.

Laws created that don't allow those that made the law access to information
