Disturbing news and Some Context

The News

The other day I had caused to go to the chemist store next to the doctors in the village at the lower end of brownsplains. Before going, I wanted to use the toilet that was nearest chemist only to find a sign on it that said it is permanently closed. I had remember it has been closed previously when I went there.

I ask one of the people in the chemist why the toilets were shut and she said they had been shut because previously, children on going into those toilets, were being molested.

I asked why not put some surveillance cameras ther or get some security people to monitor the toilets. She said that had been tried but was unsuccessful. Even though some footage might have been obtained of perpetrators they are completely unknown,un-identifiable.

Apparently the child molesting had continued. Ther was also the issue of the cost of having security people ther most of time.

Because of the physical location of the toilets, at the end of a long corridor, it was decided to close them completely.

I and my wife, who was with me at the time, was both very disturbed about what we had heard. My wife pointed out she wondered why anyone would allow ther children to go into toilets, unaccompanied.

The Action Taken

Obviously only in a very short conversation I was not able to find out all the details about why the decision was made to close the toilets. However I was told it was recommended to do so by the police.

The next closest toilets are also in the village at the lower level on Eastern Rd. But those toilets have the same layout and configuration as the problem one. It may mean that the perpetrators are simply moving to ther.

I don't know if it was just one or 2 or more instances that was the basis of the decision to close the toilet. But regardless it doesn't take away the issue that the perpetrator or perpetrators have not been caught.

From my understanding these perpetrators are not normal thinking people and blocking a location that they have used is not going to deter them from acting again. The problem still exists and the action taken to stop it is not going to stop it happening again. The problem is only going to be moved to someone and somewhere else.

Perspective

From what I have read about child sex abuse it is relatively rare that it randomly happens. Most commonly, the perpetrator is known to the victim.

Apparently the the best way to prevent all child sexual abuse, is to education childen about it. From the above link:

“School-based education programs were evaluated in 2015 by Cochrane that demonstrated improvements in protective behaviors and knowledge among children”

So rather than closing toilets,it would seem to me, the best way to prevent the problem is to educate children about the issue, without trausmasing them.

Perhaps to bring prospective to all criminal matters even those relating to adults, being educated may solve more problems than taking knee-jerk reactions.
