Travel Diary
Wednesdays 18th December to Friday 20th (2 nights) Tooloom Falls (Northern N.S.W.)
Travelled south along Beaudesert Road/Mt. Lindsey Hwy. Road gets very windy at the southern end, approaching the NSW border. Came down a little from the Range and travelled through Woodenbong, left towards Urbenville. Just north of Urbenville there is a camping area. Green grass a few perimeter trees, $10pn power, $5 unpwr, toilets and showers. Went through Urbenville and, as usual, lost the satellites and the GPS, but saw the sign to Tooloom Falls. Book says 3km dirt road, but seemed shorter. Tooloom Falls is quite a nice area, scattered shade. We (I) moved 3 times before we found a 'shady spot' with grass, (unknowing we'd get the full morning and mid-morning sun, oh well). The day was lovely, mid-twenties, but hot in the sun. Area is approx. 3 acres, clean drop loo (or is that an oxymoron). The falls are more magnificant than we'd expected. Very high. There is a steep rocky walk down to a swiming area. The water is a little murky though. A large 28' van with a family arrived a little later and we chatted for a long time. Some locals arrived, had their swim and left about an hour later. A few locals came and went. It was a good time to be here as it gets very busy during holidays.
Slightly cloudy day which cleared to a perfect day all day. Realised we are at 1500 feet, so the air was clear and no humidity, just perfect. We had found a gap in the river bank above the falls, so later we took the kayak in. A really peaceful river (Think it's the Tooloom River). We'd had a bit of trouble with an air valve and discovered about a km up the river that it was still leaking slowly. We had our escape route as one side was farming land, the other state forest. Drifted back slowly and got back safe and sound. Just hung around in the afternoon and exchanged camping spot information with the family. Went for another walk later in the day, down the rocky path, followed the cow path (and pats) to some rock pools.
Foggy this morning, but cleared to another perfect, warm day. Sat around all morning (the kayak was put away after a running repair). Left around lunch time back to Brisbane with a shopping stop on the way home at Jimboomba to get supplies for tomorrow's Christmas lunch with the kids.
