AND
It seems a lot of people and not happy with the dashcams that are on the market and it is across many brands including some well known ones.
Mandy Napier I have no recommendations but have some things you may want to consider.
I have found that often the footage you need for insurance purposes does not get recorded. Like even if you have 2 cameras, one front, one back, that the event happens on the side.
Other than that a few things to watch out for.
The maximum size Memory card the dash cam can take. This will determine how long you can record before the older footage get overwriten.
The file format it records in. If a compressed format you can store more footages before it gets overwriten.
Of course the resolution it records in. The higher the more storage you will need. Lower resolution means, all other things being equal that it will be harder to read number plates. If they are in shot.
Does it imprint date, time, position, speed, whatever on the video or is it stored in a separate file. Like movie captions. Some of such information you may not want to give to an insurance company.
How long does the battery that keeps the date and time alive, last. Can the battery been replaced or do you have to buy a whole new webcam
Do you set the date and time or does it get it from GPS. If the former you may find the date and time become inaccurate. Or may be set to some arbitrary date and time if the battery goes flat.
Would you be able to extract the video from the camera and if necessary only provide the bits you want to provide.
How easy is it to install the webcam yourself or do you have to get a professional to do it. If so do you need them to maintain it, or extract the video when necessary.
Be aware that regardless of how good the dashcam is, they rely on memory cards to store the video and memory cards can only be written to a set number if times. Once a card becomes full it will overrite the oldest video files. But eventually you will exceed the number of times that can happen. Often you will not no that, until you have an incident and go to find the video and discover it has not been recording for some considerable time.
Is the webcam likely to be stollen
Also be aware that if you do have an incident you need to get the video off as soon as possible. If you leave it too long it may be overwritten by new video.
You can get an app on a phone that can do even more than the hi end dash cams. Like link to the internet to obtain and so record street address.
Disadvantage of using a phone is that you have to set it up every time. Unless you have an old phone you can use just as a webcam
I use such an app and use it on my ebike wherever I ride. Being on a phone it's easy to transfer the files to my computer wirelessly. I do so and have many years of video recording. Personal storage is very cheap now. Also good to go back and look at memories of things like holidays.
Considering all the above do you still want a webcam?
