GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. GNU stands for GNU's not Unix, which makes the term a recursive acronym (an acronym in which one of the letters stands for the acronym itself). see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU So the Name GIMP is a part acronym of a recursive acronym See on the Gimp Web site: https://www.gimp.org/

How to learn each tool in detail

By detail, I mean learning every possible option of the tool. You may not wish to learn to use a tool in this amount of detail, as you may not not currently have a use for what the detail provides. However if you dont no what functionality the detail can provide, you may end up spending a lot of time performing functions that could have been otherwise done in a few seconds.

Suggested learning Procedure

  1. - Test the detail function on a image that will not matter if you lose it
  2. - If it requires specific shapes, colours, sizes etc, make sure you test image has those
  3. - Observe the image as it is, before you start using the tool or tools detail functions
  4. - If necessary make a copy of the image and tools setting before you use any of the tools functions. eg use Windows Snipping tool or Gimps File, Create, Screenshot
  5. - Only make one change to the tools setting at a time
  6. - Do the process that sets that the tool will perform the function
  7. - Observe how the tool or tool detail changed the image
  8. - If nothing appears to have happened, look closer. Sometimes the changes can be very minor
  9. - If it still does not appear if anything happened, then see: Why function sometimes dont work
  10. - If you did keep a copy of the image before you started using the tool, compare it with the image as it is now
  11. - Note how the tool or tool detail changed the image.
  12. - Decide if you understood why the tool or tool detail changed the image.
  13. - If you do understand proceed to the next detail item of the tool or the next tool. Otherwise get so other help. See Learning Material
  14. - Try, one at a time, the different permutations of each detail item of each tool. Sometimes changing multiple items may offset one another.
