If someone robs your house, how does 6 cameras on Johnson Road help? The CCTV cameras can pick up detail back at base and whilst the cameras may not prevent crime initially until word gets out that Forestdale now have the support of Council and Police who work together and use CCTV. The police generally take fingerprints at the scene of the crimes. They speak with neighbours gathering information ie times, cars in the area and home CTV would also provide information. It all helps to build a case. CCTV cameras have proven to identify and Police are able to effectively prosecute offenders and reduce crime. I for one am pleased that we have the cameras. One thing I would like them to be used for is to automatically control all the traffic lights on Johnson Rd so that queueing is reduced, rather then the antiquated way its currently done with timing and road ground loops.

The technology for this already exists to allow the cameras to do that and be used for other multiple purpose at the same time.

Here is an example of what can be done:

I would also like to see all the camera views live steamed 24/7 onto the internet, in the format above,so we all can see what the traffic is like before driving and possibly no which way to go. Bit like this:

What I would not like to see them used for is the big bother situation that I understand they are used for in China to “control” the public in the way the “government” wants them to behave

So does anyway one know how these cameras will operate considing we asked for them? Like · React · Reply · More · 17 Mar Lynn Whittingham replied · 1 reply Geoff Greig Jason Norling So far no one has answered your question. Even if it is known how these cameras will operate now, that does not mean that they could not be used in other ways in the future. Like in the link to the live camera I posted with current technology any camera can be used to distinguish between people, cars, trucks and public transport, so count them and no how fast each is moving so operate like speed, red light and mobile phone usage whilst driving cameras. Making part of law inforcement completely automated 25/7. What was not shown in the link is that with facial recognition it is possible to no and so record who was at the camera position at that time because of the ability to link to the driver licence photos database or any other photos database. Like Facebook photos.

With emerging technology it could be possible to determine, via facial expressions, if someone has just or is about tocommitted a crime or is about to have a heart attack or some other medical condition.

As you say, considering “the community” asked for these cameras, it shows you have to be careful what you ask for. 1 · Like · React · Reply · Edit · 19 Mar You replied · 8 replies Write a comment…

Logan safety camera program – Logan City Council logan.qld.gov.au Edited · 1 · Like · React · More · 19 Mar Jason Norling Geoff Greig it could be concerning what they could be used for with future technology or even today's tech if the rules/laws were to change Like · React · More · 19 Mar Geoff Greig Jason Norling The documents that Sue refered to do say that the Rules/laws will change.

“Council’s policies, standing orders and operational procedures adopted and amended from time to time”

The imagery and data derived from the imagery is not private. It is collected from a public place. So privacy laws do NOT apply. So considering that business and other stakeholders are likely to be involved, shouldn't we know who they are?

I note the use of the word imagery in the documents. Like “All recorded imagery shall be handled and stored in such a manner that the privacy of persons recorded is maintained” and where it says it will only be kept for 30 days.

However it's possible, via facial recognition, to convert the images to a person's digital identity , link it with the location, date and time and keep the data forever. So the above statement, in reality provided no such privacy. At any time the council could sell the data to any of the big data accumulators so they can use it to enhance their profits.

Governments and government departments been doing this already.eg the ABC and SBS.

This is acknowledged here:

“…or any other recording medium that may become available as technology progresses”

I dont think the Forestdale community no what they have possibly got themselves into. Edited · Like · React · Edit · 20 Mar at 20:21 Jason Norling Geoff Greig thanks Geoff and all great points, the decision to do this was made by a few, which in turn will effect many. As a minimum we should know stakeholders. Maybe FNHW should be asked to sort this out Like · React · More · 20 Mar at 20:36 Lynn Whittingham Geoff Greig if you had come to any of the meetings in the park or at the temple when council had representative’s attend you could have asked whatever questions you had concerning the cameras instead you stir up problems with words on FB, 1 · Like · React · More · 21 Mar at 08:35 Jason Norling Lynn Whittingham I think Geoff Greig concerns are very valid. Like · React · More · 21 Mar at 23:02 Lynn Whittingham Jason Norling that’s fine Jason but it’s annoying when only put in comments, I’m no good with words that’s why we get experts in to explain everything I can make arrangements for them to come and do another talk to explain everything all the tech stuff etc, but people like Greg need to come along and get the answers he needs. From the experts. 2 · Like · React · More · 21 Mar at 23:33 Geoff Greig Lynn Whittingham, I don't need to go to meetings or meet with “experts” to have my concerning questions answered. I am good enough with words to be able to read public documentation and have sufficient expertise to no what can be done with current and future technology. In my comments I was pointing out what can already be done with any public video camera, that the Forestdale community may not be aware of.

If you feel that informing the community and posing questions is stirring, so be it. You are entitled to your opinion.

This past week I spoke to a traffic “expert” at LCC about using the new installed cameras to better control traffic congestion on Johnston rd. He had no expertise in that area, saying the cameras were in a completely different area of the council.

It is therefore likely that data from these camers will be used by people and organisation unknown, for unintended purposes, whilst possibly much better use could be made of them, that will not happen because of a lack of council expertise.
