If you want to find out you can do so.

Many Australian newspapers and others worldwide have the old editions scanned and put online.

using such resources you can find out what the weather was like the day you're born, what the news was of the day what was on at the movies at the time, what products were around and how much they cost and a whole lot more.

Australian Newspapers

We are very luckly to have this FREE facility in Australia as although other countries do have then, you have to pay to use many of them. See List of newspaper Archives

Many old Australian newspapers have been digitized which can mean that you can access then and read them online.

TROVE:

https://trove.nla.gov.au/

From: https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/page/5653 The oldest newspaper I could find in Trove. NOTE: the spelling. Using f rather than s but only in lower case. Perhaps that was the symbol for lower case s a the time?

is part of the National Library of Australia. The above link will take you to it.

However it will NOT take you to the Newspapers only section. Those that designed the web page did it so that you enter what you want to find and it will give you all classifications of information on your search including newspapers. You can THEN restrict your search to only newspapers. Thats not the way I want to do it

BUT, this link will take you straight to newspapers:

Search newspapers by your Birthday

When at the above you can select to see newspapers by date by clicking on the Date icon under “Browse articles by”

Then select a year then month and finally day.

A list of newspapers will then be presented. If your birthday was on a weekend you may have to select the Friday before of the Monday after to get a more complete list of newspapers

Clicking on a newspaper will present a list of pages for that paper:

Clicking on a page number will give you a list of articles on that page, BUT clicking on the icon to the right of the page number will show a graphic of the page as well as a list of articles on the page.

When you are at the Trove newspaper pages you may be able to see a list of articles on the left pane of screen and the actual picture (graphic) on the right

Ther may be a series of 5 icons on the left of the graphic pane that allows you to: Reset Zoom, Zoom in, Zoom Out, Rotate Left and Rotate Right. Zoom in makes the image larger, zooming out makes it smaller. You can move the part of the page you can see by dragging on the image. Ther also may be a icon on the top right of the graphic pane that allows to to make the image almost to the full size of the screen or revert it back to what it was. When full size you may not be able to use some on the below functions and may not see the list of articles

At the top to the graphic may be an indicator to show which page you are looking at. Clicking on the page number Should allow you to advance to the next page and go back to the previous page.

Text or Graphic

These newspapers have been scanned (like photographed) so that you can get them via the internet . But they have also been OCRed (optical Character recognition) which is a process of converting the picture of the words to words. The words can then manipulated just like any other words in a computer. However because of the quality of the original scanned newspaper, the fact that they were newspapers, that are quite old and the fact that OCR is not 100% accurate means that that the resulting text may not be accurate. If you want, you can submit correction to the OCRed text.

The OCRed and corrected text is what is used to index all the newspapers, such that searching for somthing may not necessary find something that does exist.

Copying Text

If the text you wish to copy is not being shown on the left pane click the graphic that shows the text and select “Read this Article” or click on “All articles on this page” and then click on the article you are interested in or click on the icons that take you to the next or previous article on that page. When the text is being displayed in the text pane it can be selected and copied the same as any other text.

Copying Graphics

Use the Windows 10 Snipping tool to copy graphics images after setting the image the size you want. See above. Or pressing the Print Screen key on the key will do a screen capture to the clipboard. You can then use a graphics manipulation program to paste the text to, and then save it.

If you wish to email a link to the an item or items you have found you can click on the details icon on the text menu and copy the article or page identifier and paste it into an email.

Other functions

Ther are other functions on the left of the text pane, they being: Article text, Tags, Lists, Notes, Categories, Buy, Print and Toggle Layout

Weather, movies products and ther cost and other information

Other than the news of the day here are some hints of finding other things:

Weather, can often be on the mast head of the first page and or on separate page. Some papers even have the bureau of Meteorology pressure maps.

Then end of the classified often had what was on at the movies at various theatres as wall as live shows.

Advertisements showed the products that where being sold at the time with ther respective prices.

The real estate section would show land and house prices

The births, marriages and deaths are useful resources for genealogical research but are not a complete record as not all people could afford the cost of the putting notices in newspapers

Although ther are many on them, most you have to pay to use. Especially in the UK and the USA
