When typing was taught on a typewriter, it used to take about a year to get a student up to 20 words per minute.

I can't touch top myself but when I used to teach computing, in the 90s I taught hundreds of people how to touch type using a typing tutor program. In about eight one hour lessons, using a computer most students could type at 20 words per minute with 90% accuracy.

For at least the last 5 years when I teach people how to use voice typing on a phone , I can get them to voice type at about 80 words per minute with 90% accuracy in about one hour.
