House next door. No 26

BUT from the above Facebook site

William Green writes: “That house at 26 Mercer St still stands today without the front verandah. The history of 26 and 28 mercer Street is very interesting. When the Government health Officer was transferred to Queenscliff, from Portsea, the Government supplied a boat and crew and also built a boatshed and pier. The crew were housed in the “Pilots Row of Houses” in Gellibrand St. The Health Officer was also appointed the Migration Officer. He built a small house on the block at 28 Mercer St which burnt down so he built the bigger house on the 28 Mercer St block.. The replacemnt Health and Migration Officer felt 28 Mercer St was too big so he purchased 26 Mercer St and built the house that sits there today.. 28 Mercer St lost it's entrance to Mercer St and became 15/17 Steven Street. My Grand Pa and Grandma purchased 28 Mercer Street in the early 1920's ,I lived in the house with our family until the 1960's when The Lawrence family purchased the house.”

The caption at the bottom of the photo on the above site says it was no 28 Mercer St. But I think that refers to the house at the back that the above William Green said had it address changed to 15/17 Steven Street.

If you use the < and > icons on the above link to flicker you can move though other old photos on houses in Mercer St but none are of the land at No 28.

This is zoomed in on an old aerial photo, 1927-40 from the queenscliff history museum:

28 Mercer St that you lived in appears not to be ther then. The house then 28 Mercer appears to be set back on top of the hill.

I have my Drone video of the same view, so may be able to put a comparison shot of it. Or the video when you sold it ha an aerial shot:

The Google Street view Photos

When you and Tom were up here I looked up older Google Street view photos. Which of course I kept. Here they are:

If you go to this site:

And slide though the photos you will eventually find these ones:

Photos of the house that I assume was torn down?

Bluff House

The only reference I can find to Buff is the black lighthouse and that Queenscliff was originally called, Shortland's Bluff.

From: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queenscliff,_Victoria

“The Post Office opened on 1 May 1853 as Shortland's Bluff and was renamed Queenscliff in 1854”

Sands and Mcdougal records

I will later check who lived in 28 Mercer St. It's records go from the 1800 to the mid 1980s I think.

Or this is how you coud do it:
