BASIC 2 - Describe Window components, Use simple applications (cut, copy, paste, move, navigate around text file, create drawings), Windows Explorer (filing system and saving files), Overview explanation of Internet and Email)

DESIGNED FOR : For those who want to understand in detail the basics of computers, their filing system (Windows Explorer) and to manage and organise their files and folders (data storage within their filing system)

MINIMUM CRITERIA for this course. More experienced beginners who have basic skills or knowledge of using a computer able to use a mouse (to navigate around a screen) and able to use a computer keyboard to understand the elements of a desktop screen and know where all programs are located and know how to open a program (not just from a shortcut) able to use the common tools used by all Windows programs (cut, copy, paste, drag, minimise, restore down, maximise.

OUTCOMES : It is intended that at the end of the course participants will : Be able to switch between programs, manipulate, move and resize windows and other Task Bar options Have a deeper understanding of other elements of the Desktop Screen, Menus within programs, Controls and prompts Open programs from various sources, create data files and save to their filing system (Windows Explorer) Be able to create, move, delete folders and sub-folders, move, delete and copy files Sort files in folders, add column headings Understand the potential for Viruses and intervention of their computers by others

Session 1 More on Desktop Screen and Manipulate Windows

  2. - Windows Task Bar to: Switch between Programs (grouped and ungrouped) and Close Programs
  3. - More on the System Tray, Use the Quick Launch Bar to: Start Programs, add Icons and remove Icons
  4. - Minimize, Restore, Close, Resize, Move, Arrange single and multiple windows Manipulate Windows

Session 2 : Menus, Help, Controls, Use and save simple applications

  1. - Menus within programs, access and navigate through a programs help function
  2. - Identify all the Controls that are used in windows, operate them and describe what they are used for
  3. - Open programs to find out how to: Enter, Delete, Cut, Move and revise Text and Save and Open documents
  4. - Use the basic functionality of various simple programs
  5. - Copy information to and from multiple programs
  6. - Save and Save As
  7. - Exercises incorporating all of the above.

Session 3 : Windows Explorer (basic)

  4. - Expanding and contracting folders

Session 4 : More Windows Explorer, Terminology, Viruses, Overview of Internet and Email

  1. - Continue with Windows Explorer - review
  2. - Benefits of using common computer terminology for the purposes of effective problem-solving with others
  3. - Describe what Viruses are, how you get them and how to prevent getting them on your computer
  4. - (If time permits) Overview of the Internet and Emails
