Internet consistency/inconsistency

One of the neighbours in our street poster on our local Facebook page about inconsistencies she was having in using the Internet. After I replied to her, she returned with the comment:

“Geoff Greig this is actually the first bit of advice that has ever made sense, even after many hours on interactions with Telstra. Thank you!!! I have a plan I will try first. If unsuccessful I'd love to take you up on your offer and reach out for a consult.”

As she found it useful, I thought others might also. Hence I repeat it here.

If you mean by lack of consistency, different speeds and ability to use certain internet services at different times , it most likely has nothing to do with your service provider.

Like, who you were to hire a car from, has nothing to do with how long it takes to drive from point a to point b, at various times during the day. It all has to do with traffic congestion. Same thing applies to internet data. Depends on the data traffic at that point in time

However there is also the consideration on how your have your internal network set up in your house, as well as the amount of equipment, software and operating software you use.

Even with the same constantly used hardware and software ther can be BIG inconsistancies in moving data within a home network.

Practically every day I move gigabytes of data from my phone to my home server via home internal WiFi .Nothing to do with the Internet .The speed can vary by thousands of a percent.

Even when moving large amounts of data on the same device, that is movings it from one storage device to another with no network involved at all, I often have speed variations of 1,000s %

So speed inconsistency can often have nothing to do with the Internet, per se.

I have found that software switching things off and on and disconnecting and reconnecting devices often dramatically improves speeds. Like moving a few gigabyte of data that would have taken 30 hours is reduced to 10 minutes. Or internet video that is often pausing, plays perfectly.

My many years of computer programming has taught me that ther are heaps of bugs and designed flaws in software, such that things only work most of the time but never all the time. The IT industry is far from perfect.
